VHP workers tear posters of film Pathan in cinema halls in Gujarat, five arrested

Pathaan Besharam Rang Song: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists barged into a cinema hall in Gujarat’s Surat city and tore the posters of Shahrukh Khan starrer ‘Pathan’. The police gave this information on Sunday. An official said that five VHP workers have been arrested for rioting. The film ‘Pathan’ is facing criticism for showing Deepika Padukone in a saffron bikini in the song ‘Besharam Rang’. Leaders of various organisations, including Vishwa Hindu Parishad, have demanded a ban on the film which is slated to release on January 25. The incident took place on Saturday evening at Rupali Cinema located in Surat’s Rander area.

Police gave this information

Police Inspector AS Sonara said, ‘‘We received information about a group of people tearing posters of the film ‘Pathan’ at Rupali Cinema. We have arrested five of them and booked them for rioting. He belongs to VHP.’’

He said a case has been registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections for unlawful assembly, intentional insult and criminal intimidation, among other things.

Recently, multiplex owners in Gujarat met Minister of State for Home Harsh Shanghvi, who assured them of providing police protection to theaters against anti-social elements.

In a letter to Shanghvi, the Multiplex Association of Gujarat said, ‘‘The right forum for anyone raising objections about the film would be either the official authority or the Government of India or the courts, as the film has been cleared by the Censor Board. has been approved.’’ The letter states that there are several groups who ‘‘are illegally targeting cinema exhibitors based on their own understanding and agenda.’’
