Kamal Haasan’s party MNM will support Congress in the by-election, the actor told why he took the decision

It was during this time that speculation was rife that Kamal Haasan would go in support of the Congress, though the MNM had gone it alone in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the 2021 state assembly elections.

Actor Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has decided to extend unconditional support to Congress candidate E V K S Elangovan in the Erode East bypoll. Elangovan met Kamal on Monday (January 23) and sought his support.

The MNM leader told Elangovan that he would announce his decision after consulting his party members. The MNM executive committee, which met in Chennai on Wednesday (January 25), resolved to unconditionally support the Congress candidate. 

Stalin thanked Haasan

Elangovan thanked Kamal Haasan and said that this step shows his commitment towards secularism. DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin thanked Haasan for supporting the SPA. Briefing reporters after chairing a meeting of the party’s governing and executive councils, Haasan said they unanimously supported the DMK-led SPA candidate and "My friend" to Elangovan "unconditional support" have decided to give.

Join hands to fight against communal forces

When asked about supporting the DMK-backed candidate, Haasan said they have joined hands to fight against communal forces and those who interfere in every aspect of people’s lives, including food. "intrusion" trying to do.

He alleged that the elected governments were not being allowed to work independently. In response to a question, he said, "When it comes to national importance, you have to put an end to differences." Elangovan had met Haasan earlier. The MNM chief also announced the appointment of senior leader A Arunachalam as the party’s election in-charge for the assembly constituency.
