Father of ORS Dilip Mahalanabis will get Padma Vibhushan posthumously, know who he is

Republic Day 2023: Padma awardees have been announced. Padma Vibhushan (posthumously) has been given to Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis in the field of Medicine (Pediatrics). In addition, 25 people were awarded the Padma Shri. Dilip Mahalanabis is also known as the father of Oral Rehydration Solution. He passed away in the month of October last year.

The credit for popularizing oral rehydration therapy also goes to Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis. He used ORS for the first time in the 1970s while treating lakhs of Bangladeshi refugees in camps near Bangaon in West Bengal. He was recognized globally for his extraordinary work.

Born in the year 1934

Dilli Mahalanabis was born in the year 1934 in Kishoreganj of undivided Bengal. After this, he graduated from Calcutta Medical College in the year 1958. Later he started working as an intern in the pediatric department of a hospital. Along with this, he got a chance to do medical study in England. The British government started the National Health Service in the 1950s, for which he was also selected.

Patent not taken for ORS

After earning two degrees in London and Edinburgh, Dileep became the first Indian to be elected as registrar of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children in London. One special thing about Dilip Mahalanabis was that he never took a patent for his invention of Oral Rehydration Solution. While this solution saved the lives of millions of people. In the year 1990, he was also posted as a clinical research officer in the famous ICDDRB in Dhaka. He worked on this post for many years.
